Cutaway view and specifications
The high-pressure pump (CP4.2) is equipped with two pistons. The high-pressure pump is mounted on the force-generation side and is powered by the timing chain mounted on the crankshaft. The high-pressure pump is capable of generating pressures of up to 2000 bar.
The fuel quantity control valve determines the pressure that the pump generates and that is thus present within the fuel rail. This prevents the high-pressure pump from generating excessively high levels of pressure during partial-load operation; the rail pressure regulating valve would then have to discharge the excess pressure. The high-pressure pump's drive-power requirement is reduced, simultaneously reducing the engine's fuel consumption.
