E60, E61, E63, E64: Wiper Switch
Installation location
The wiper switch is mounted on the steering-column switch cluster (SZL).

The wiper switch does not locate in different switch positions.
On the end of the wiper switch is an axial switch for selecting automatic mode (controlled by rain-light sensor). Integrated in the wiper switch is a 4-position thumbwheel.
How it works
The wiper switch has two upward settings with a perceptible point of resistance in between.
- Press upwards once: wiper speed 1 (if wipers were previously off)
- Press upwards twice: wiper speed 2
If the wiper switch is pressed past the point of resistance, wiper speed 2 is activated immediately.
If the wiper switch is pressed downwards, the wiper speed is reduced by one setting. If the wipers are not already switched on, a flick wipe is performed. Pressing the switch downwards also initiates a flick wipe if automatic mode is active.
When automatic mode is active, the thumbwheel sets the sensitivity of the rain-light sensor.
Automatic mode is activated by an axial switch. The function LED then lights up. In addition, when automatic mode is activated (controlled by the rain-light sensor) any previously set wiper speed is cancelled. Intermittent wipe is only possible in automatic mode. Automatic mode is cancelled when Terminal R status changes to OFF.
Pulling the wiper switch backwards (towards driver) initiates the windscreen washer functions.
On the Touring: If the wiper switch is pulled once backwards (towards the driver), the rear wiper switches on in intermittent mode. The rear window washer pump is activated at speed 2.
