11 78 513 Replacing both lambda oxygen control sensors (N54)

Special tools required: 

See ENGINE - SPECIAL TOOLS (N54, N63) .

WARNING: Scalding hazard! 

Work should only be carried out on an exhaust system that has cooled down.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Installation: 

If an oxygen sensor is to be reused, only apply a thin and uniform coat of Never Seez Compound to thread.

The part of the oxygen control sensor which projects into the exhaust system branch (sensor ceramic) must not  be cleaned or come into contact with lubricant.

Disconnect plug connection for oxygen control sensor, cylinders 1 to 3.

Release oxygen control sensor (1) with special tools 11 7 030  and 11 9 150  .

IMPORTANT: When using special tool 11 7 030  in conjunction with special tool 11 9 150  , it is essential to reduced the prescribed tightening torque by 3 Nm.

Tightening torque 11 78 1AZ  , see EMISSION CONTROL

Installation: 

Cable color black, cylinders 1 to 3.

Disconnect plug connection for oxygen control sensor, cylinders 4 to 6.

Release oxygen control sensor (1) with special tools 11 7 030  and 11 9 150  .

IMPORTANT: When using special tool 11 7 030  in conjunction with special tool 11 9 150  , it is essential to reduced the prescribed tightening torque by 3 Nm.

Tightening torque 11 78 1AZ  , see EMISSION CONTROL

Installation: 

Cable color grey, cylinders 4 to 6.

Assemble engine.

Check function of DME control unit.



Special tools required: 

See ENGINE - SPECIAL TOOLS (N54, N63) .

Installation: 

The threads of new lambda control/monitor sensors are already coated with Never Seez Compound.

If a lambda control/monitor sensor is to be reused, apply a thin and even coating of Never Seez Compound to the thread only.

The part of the lambda control/monitor sensor which projects into the exhaust system branch (sensor ceramics) must not  be cleaned and not  coated with lubricant.

Unlock and disconnect plug connection for lambda control sensor, cylinders 1 - 3.

Installation: 

Plug connection must snap audibly into place!

Release oxygen control sensor (1) with special tools 11 7 030  and 11 9 150  .

IMPORTANT: When using special tool 11 7 030  in conjunction with special tool 11 9 150  , it is essential to reduced the prescribed tightening torque by 3 Nm.

Tightening torque 11 78 1AZ  , see EMISSION CONTROL

Installation: 

Cable color black for oxygen control sensor (1), cylinders 1 - 3.

Unlock and disconnect plug connection for oxygen control sensor, cylinders 4 - 6.

Installation: 

Plug connection must snap audibly into place!

Release oxygen control sensor (1) with special tools 11 7 030  and 11 9 150  .

IMPORTANT: When using special tool 11 7 030  in conjunction with special tool 11 9 150  , it is essential to reduced the prescribed tightening torque by 3 Nm.
