54 37 290 Hardtop emergency opening

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: Always perform the emergency opening procedure with the aid of an assistant.
Only move the soft top manually when the ignition is switched off!
Danger of damage to hydraulic valves.
The applied force must always be even on the left and right otherwise the linkage will bend.
Always execute all movements of the roof module with the assistance of a second person.
Danger of injury by trapping!

Unclip the protective cap.

Fit the special tool 54 0 163 in conjunction with 13 5 250 .

Drive out the square pin.

Open the closures by turning the square pin.

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage! Lower the square pin again after opening the closure.
Turn back the square pin again by a few degrees if necessary.

Open tailgate.

Take out luggage compartment floor trim panel.

Release screws (1).

Remove cover (2) for hydraulic unit.

Use the Allen key to open the shutoff valve on hydraulic unit by one turn.

NOTE: System is now depressurized and can be moved manually.

Close the luggage compartment cover.

Close rear lid.

Unlocking the coupling lock: 

Turn the hydraulic cylinder (1) toward the passenger compartment.

Mount the special tool 54 0 161 onto the piston rod.

Tip the special tool 54 0 161 upward.

This causes the coupling lock (1) to jump over the dead center.

Then slide on the coupling lock (1).

To fold up the roof shells, position one person on the left and one on the right side.

It is imperative that you hold the front and rear roof shells at the same time.

Move the roof shells carefully and evenly.

Fold up the roof shells evenly and without tilting.

NOTE: Have the special tool 54 0 240 ready.

Manually open the rear module.

Clip the special tool 54 0 240 onto hydraulic cylinder (1) on left and right.

IMPORTANT: The opening in the assembly support must face towards the rear of the vehicle.

NOTE: Any luggage in the luggage compartment must be removed.
IMPORTANT: Note the weight of the roof shells!

It is imperative that you only grasp the front roof shell when lowering the roof shells.

Carefully set down the roof shells.

NOTE: Remove special tool 54 0 240 .

Close rear module.

IMPORTANT: The soft top must not  be moved any further after emergency opening.
The vehicle should no longer be moved to avoid vibrations.
Roof shells which are not  locked may cause irreparable damage.
