11 31 005 Checking camshaft timing (N20, N26)
Special tools required:
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove top CLEAN AIR PIPE .
- Remove SPARK PLUGS .
- Remove CYLINDER HEAD COVER .
- Remove underbody protection at front and rear.
Remove seal plug (1).
Rotate crankshaft at central bolt into TDC position.
Slide in special tool 2 219 548 into dowel hole and secure crankshaft.
Remove seal plug (1) in direction of arrow using a screwdriver.
Installation note:
Coat special tool 2 219 548 with oil for simplifying disassembly and installation.
Secure crankshaft with special tool 2 219 548 via the dowel hole.
Use special tool (1) to attach special tool (4) to the cylinder head.
Attach special tool (1) to cylinder head using a screw (2).
Position special tool (3) without recess at mounting flats of the exhaust camshaft.
The cams of the exhaust camshaft point diagonally upwards when in TDC firing position at cylinder 1.
Position the special tool (2) with recess at the mounting flats of the intake camshaft.
With 1st cylinder in TDC firing position, cams of intake camshaft (1) point upward at an angle.
Fit gauge for the camshaft sensor wheel (1) to the cylinder head.
Check setting of the camshaft sensor wheels.

Position the camshaft sensor wheel of the exhaust camshaft in the direction of the arrow using the pin (1).
Position the camshaft sensor wheel of the intake camshaft in the direction of the arrow using the pin (2).
Installation note:
If the camshaft sensor wheels have been readjusted, the CENTRAL BOLTS must be loosened.
If necessary, adjust VALVE TIMING .
Assemble engine.
