51 31 000 Removing and installing/renewing windscreen

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:
NOTE: Removal is performed with ROLL OUT 2000  or SPIDER .

The following new parts/consumables are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).

Material Quantity
Windscreen 1
Windscreen cover (for replacement of windscreen) 1
Spacer 3.8x4x12.7 mm 4
Stop pad, half-round (h = 5 mm), from repair kit 5
Small repair kit 1
Sika Activator 205 (for windscreen cover) 1
In the case of replacement up to version (build date) 04/2012 with appropriate version: 
Rain/light/solar sensor or Rain/light/solar and condensation sensor

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape.

Push wire from ROLL OUT 2000  along line (1) through adhesive bead (2).

For details on how to proceed, refer to: WINDOW REMOVAL WITH "ROLL OUT 2000" .

Lift out windscreen with suction cup. See 51 3 220 .

NOTE: When cutting is carried out at the bottom, the engine compartment lid must be in the service position.
Wires and hoses remain connected.

Move ENGINE COMPARTMENT LID INTO SERVICE POSITION .

Cut through windscreen adhesive bead at bottom.

Lift out windscreen with suction cup. See 51 3 220 .

Pull off adhesive tapes all round.

Fitting spacer buffers (spacers): 

IMPORTANT: To avoid windscreen breakage and wind noises:
Completely remove remnants of removed spacer buffers (1) and (2) and maintain installation location exactly.

Spacer* (1) and semicircular spacer buffer** (2) must be mounted centrally so that they cover the embossed marks on sheet metal flange.

*Spacer 3.8x4x12.7 mm

Installation note: 

If necessary, replace defective EXPANDING FOAM TAPE  (1).

IMPORTANT: Just before the windscreen is installed, press down expanding foam tape (1) using special tool 51 0 300 or reattach expanding foam tape (1). An expanding foam tape (1) that has become relaxed could change the position of the adhesive bead and thereby lead to wind noise or windscreen leaks.

If necessary, fit COVER/RUBBER FRAME  (1) for windscreen.

Pre-treat adhesive area with Sika-Aktivator205.

Overview of windscreen bonding:

a1 = 23 mm 1 = bead joint (approx. 300 mm from edge of window glass)

a2 = 7 mm 2 = window glass corner (measuring point for a1 )

x = 60 mm

NOTE: Adhesive area for plastic adhesive tapes (1) must be free from grease and dust.

Stick two yellow plastic adhesive tapes (1) to roof at distance (A) from outside corners.

Length: 400 mm

Perform the following steps carefully on windscreen (1) using SIPHON :

Windscreen gap dimensions: 

To avoid wind noises, the windscreen (1) must be lower than the roof outer skin (2).

Measure the short length (A) on the left and right using special tool 51 0 010 .

Rubber frame (3) must be even and in parallel to roof outer skin (2).

(A) without HUD 3.4 ± 1.5 mm 5.5 ± 1.5 mm

In the case of replacement with appropriate version: 

Version up to 04/2012: 

Install new rain/light/solar and (condensation) sensor  . See 61 35 685 REPLACING RAIN/LIGHT SOLAR SENSOR or 61 35 688 REPLACING SOLAR RAIN/LIGHT SENSOR AND CONDENSATION SENSOR .

Version after 04/2012: 

Remount RAIN-LIGHT-SOLAR AND (CONDENSATION SENSOR) .
