11 00 050 Removing and installing engine (N20, N26)

Necessary preliminary work:

Disconnect the BATTERY CABLE NEGATIVE TERMINAL .
Remove acoustic cover . See 11 12 090 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/RENEWING ACOUSTIC COVER (N20) or 11 12 090 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/RENEWING ACOUSTIC COVER (N26)
MOVE engine compartment lid into service position.
Remove transmission.. See MANUAL TRANSMISSION - REPAIR - F30 or AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - REPAIR - F30
Remove the CATALYTIC CONVERTER .
Drain ENGINE OIL .
Remove SOUND INSULATION bulkhead upper part.
Remove INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
REMOVE bottom clean air pipe.
REMOVE LEFT CHARGE AIR DUCT .
Remove RIGHT CHARGE-AIR DUCT .
Detach all coolant hoses from engine.
Remove COOLANT THERMOSTAT .
Remove AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR and place to one side (no drawing off).
Remove FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL (only all-wheel drive).

For removing and installing the engine, the towing hook 72 15 8 108 670 is required.

Slightly lift service cover (2) from rubber mount (1) until lock of cover (3) is accessible.

Press together lock and remove cover (3).

Release nuts (1) and remove positive battery cables from positive battery connection point.

Tightening torque 12 42 3AZ/4AZ .

Release vacuum line (1) to vacuum pump.

Detach the fuel line at the snap fastener (1).

Seal fuel lines with seals (1) and (2) from set of special tools 13 5 160 .

Unlock and pull off connector (1) from DME control unit.

Place engine wiring harness to one side.

Open retaining bracket (1) for engine wiring harness.

Unlock and pull off connectors (2) and (3) at power distribution module.

Securely attach engine wiring harness to engine.

Release screws (1) on engine mount on left and right.

Tightening torque: 22 11 2AZ .

Schematic diagram:

Screw towing eye (1) into cylinder head.

Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ .

Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine crane.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 only from designated mounting eyelets (2).

The installation eye is in close proximity to starter motor.

IMPORTANT: Note restrictions on steering shaft and bulkhead.

Lift engine out with engine crane.

Assemble engine.

Check function of DME.
