21 90 ... Troubleshooting The Clutch

CLUTCH TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

Fault Cause Remedy
Clutch slipping
  1. Clutch pressure too low.
  2. Lining too heavily worn.
  3. Lining oiled-

    Leaks:

    • Engine 

      Crankshaft radial seal at front and rear incl. end cover, oil sump, cylinder head gasket, cylinder head, oil filler cap, timing case cover, flywheel mounting bolts

    • Cooling system 

      Hoses and connections, heating valves, sealing plugs on engine block

    • Steering unit 

      Steering gear, servo pump, hydraulic lines and connections

    • Transmission 

      Drive shaft radial seal, sealing plugs of countershaft

    • Release bearing 
  4. Clutch was overheated.
  5. Clutch is not an original-equipment BMW part.
  1. Replace clutch

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  2. Replace clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  3. Carefully rectify leaks, clean oil contamination and replace clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  4. Replace clutch

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  5. Install original-equipment BMW part.
Clutch stick/slip
  1. Lining not acc. to specification.
  2. Lining oiled:

    Causes: refer to "clutch slipping, point c"

  3. Release unit presses on one side.
  4. Clutch presses at an angle.
  5. Crankshaft does not align with transmission input shaft.
  6. Engine and transmission suspension defective.
  7. Clutch plate not an original-equipment BMW part.
  8. Engine, speed characteristics not O.K.
  9. Engine management not OK (particularly on diesel engine).
  1. Replace clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  2. Replace clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  3. Check release lever.
  4. Replace clutch

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  5. Check engine/transmission contact face, adapter sleeves and cover plate for damage.
  6. Replace engine and transmission suspension.
  7. Install original-equipment BMW part.
  8. Eliminate causes according to engine test.
  9. Check engine control unit.
Clutch releases poorly
(Gear difficult to engage)
  -
Clutch does not separate
(Gear cannot be engaged)
  1. Lining of clutch plate broken.
  2. Lining rusted onto flywheel.
  3. Guide bearing for transmission input shaft in crankshaft defective.
  4. Leak in clutch hydraulic system.
  5. Tangential leaf springs of clutch bent down.
  6. Release unit binds on guide sleeve.
  1. Replace clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  2. Evenly sand flywheel with sandpaper (120-180 grain) and replace clutch plate.
  3. Replace guide bearing in crankshaft.
  4. Replace faulty parts and bleed clutch hydraulics Refer to BLEEDING CLUTCH HYDRAULIC SYSTEM .
  5. Replace clutch

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  6. Clean guide sleeve, remove and install release unit

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

Fault Cause Remedy
Clutch noise
  1. Imbalance of clutch and clutch plate too great.
  2. Torsional-vibration damper defective.
  3. Release unit defective.
  4. Guide bearing for transmission input shaft in crankshaft defective.
  5. Clutch rivet connection loose.
  1. Replace clutch/clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  2. Replace clutch plate

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) . or if necessary replace dual-mass flywheel,

  3. Replace release unit

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .

  4. Replace guide bearing in crankshaft.
  5. Replace clutch

    Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC) .
