32 31 070 Removing and installing/replacing steering shaft lower section (N63)

IMPORTANT:
If the lower section of the steering spindle is separated from the steering gear/steering spindle middle section, the steering column switch cluster may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- REMOVE ENGINE COVER
- Remove left INTAKE FILTER HOUSING
- Remove EXPANSION TANK FROM BODY
and place to one side
Pay attention to plug connection on coolant expansion tank and oil tank.
- Remove POWER STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR TANK FROM BODY and place to one side
- Remove WATER VALVE FOR HEATER
Release clamping screws (1).
Push steering spindle (2) together and remove.
Installation:
Clean thread to remove all remnants of screw securing adhesive.
Replace clamping screws.
Connect steering spindle first to steering gear and then to steering spindle middle section.
Clamping screw must rest in steering gear groove or steering spindle middle section.
Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ .
No kinking permitted!
After installation:
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to full lock. The airbag warning lamp must not light up in the process.
- Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment/adjustment for active front steering. See ADJUSTMENT FOR ACTIVE FRONT STEERING and STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT .
- Check directional stability of car
