Automatic Transmission: Removal

NOTE: Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.
  1. Disconnect battery.
  2. Remove front underbody protection. Remove reinforcement plate. See Fig 1 .
  3. Remove exhaust system as necessary to remove transmission. See EXHAUST article.
  4. Remove heat shield.
  5. Unfasten screws and remove front propeller shaft at transfer box and tie to one side. See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT article.
  6. Supporting engine and transmission: install Special Tool (11 0 250) between dome cross-brace and engine suspension eye and secure with dowel pin. See Fig 2 . Pretension special tool with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A". Installation position, measurement "A" = 36 cm.
  7. Remove propeller shaft from transmission. See DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article. Release center bearing. Tie propeller shaft to one side.
  8. Grip clamping sleeve (1) and loosen selector lever nut (2). See Fig 3 .
  9. Release screws (1). See Fig 4 . Remove holder with shift cable (2).
  10. Unscrew bolt (1). See Fig 5 . Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.
  11. Release screw (1) on engine carrier. See Fig 6 . Lay hydraulic lines to one side.
  12. Lift off cover. See Fig 7 .
  13. Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw is visible in opening. See Fig 8 . Release all screws of torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). Crank engine further and release remaining 2 screws.
  14. Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, insert Special Tools (24 4 131 / 24 4 137) in opening in transmission housing. Clamp torque converter. See Fig 9 .
  15. Unfasten screws and remove cross member. See Fig 10 .
  16. Detach plugs (1) and (2) from servomotor. See Fig 11 .
  17. Unlock plug (1) and remove. See Fig 12 . Unclip cable from transmission housing.
  18. CAUTION: Risk of damage: When lowering the transmission, make sure the engine does not rest against the bulkhead.
  19. Lowering transmission: turn Special Tool (11 0 250) back with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A". See Fig 2 . Transmission removal position, measurement "A" = approx. 34 cm.
  20. Support transmission with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). See Fig 13 .
  21. Unscrew bolt (1) See Fig 14 .
  22. Unfasten screws. See Fig 15 . Pull transmission of engine towards rear and lower.
