11 31 025 Removing and installing/replacing inlet camshaft (M57T2)
Necessary preliminary tasks:
Crank engine at crankshaft with special tool 11 6 480.
The cams on the inlet camshaft at the 1st cylinder point downwards.
Release screw (1).
Sprocket wheel classification (0) value from 0 to 9
Tightening torque, see 11 31 1AZ in 11 31 CAMSHAFT .
Undo plug in timing case cover at bottom.
Crank engine back at crankshaft through 45°.
Turn exhaust camshaft at hexagon head in direction of arrow.
The hydraulic chain tensioner can be secured in place in this position with special tool 11 3 340.
Lock hydraulic chain tensioner with special tool 11 3 340.
Remove protective cap in direction of arrow.
Installation
Reinstall protective cap with some grease.
Crank engine at crankshaft with special tool 11 6 480.
Secure crankshaft at flywheel with special tool 11 6 080.
Release sprocket wheel bolts (1).
Tightening torque, see 11 31 1AZ in 11 31 CAMSHAFT .
Release bearing pins (2) of guide rails.
Release sprocket wheel with chain (1) from inlet camshaft in direction of arrow.
Release guide rail (2) from mounting and pull out in direction of arrow.
Remove sprocket wheel (2) in direction of arrow to right from timing chain (3) and remove towards top.
Release bolts (1) of inlet camshaft bearing cap in 1/2 turn increments evenly from outside to inside.
Remove bearing caps of inlet camshaft and lift out inlet camshaft (1).
All bearing caps are marked.
E = inlet camshaft.
A = exhaust camshaft.
A Exhaust camshaft
Insert inlet camshaft.
Position (1) of inlet camshaft gear flush with cylinder head.
Position (2) of exhaust camshaft gear flush with cylinder head.
If necessary, resecure camshafts.
Marking (1) on inlet camshaft must be between markings (2) on exhaust camshaft.
See illustration.
The inlet camshaft bearing covers are marked E 1... E 7 from the exhaust side.
Fit bearing covers.
Insert all screws (1) and initially tighten so that they are free of play.
Tighten down inlet camshaft bearing caps in 1/2 turn increments evenly from inside to outside.
Mount sprocket wheel and release chain tensioner.
Cams of both camshafts must point to top right.
Place special tool 11 6 321 on inlet camshaft.
Secure special tool 11 6 321 with special tool 11 6 322.
Installation:
The exhaust camshaft only has to be checked, adjustment is not possible.
Secure special tool 11 6 254 to cylinder head with bolts (1).
Check inlet camshaft axial clearance.
Set up special tool 11 6 252 with dial gauge.
Refer to TECHNICAL DATA
Procedure for exhaust camshaft is identical.
Adjust VALVE TIMING .
Assemble engine.
