11 31 001 Replacing camshafts (M57T2)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Crank engine at crankshaft with special tool 11 6 480.

The cams on the inlet camshaft at the 1st cylinder point downwards.

Release screw (1).

NOTE: Bolt (1) must be removed beforehand as it is no longer accessible in TDC position.
Sprocket wheel classification (0) value from 0 to 9
Tightening torque, see 11 31 1AZ in 11 31 CAMSHAFT .

IMPORTANT: No piston is permitted to be in the TDC position risk of damage  .
Crank engine back at crankshaft through 45°.

Turn exhaust camshaft at hexagon head in direction of arrow.

The hydraulic chain tensioner can be secured in place in this position with special tool 11 3 340.

NOTE: The hydraulic chain tension is forced back by rotating the exhaust and inlet camshafts.

Lock hydraulic chain tensioner with special tool 11 3 340.

NOTE: If the sprocket wheel is removed without the hydraulic chain tensioner being locked, the chain tensioner piston will slip out and can then only be pressed back again with a considerable amount of effort.
