Wheel Carrier: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove wheel.
  2. Remove collar nut. Operate brake to do so. See Fig 1 .
  3. Remove brake disk, disconnect parking brake Bowden cable from wheel brake and remove ABS speed sensor. See appropriate article in BRAKES.
  4. Remove stabilizer link from swinging arm and spring strut from wheel carrier. See SPRING STRUT SHOCK ABSORBER  .
  5. Unfasten nut, remove screw and press swinging arm downwards. See Figure .
  6. Press out axle shaft with special tool (33 2 111/116/117) with 5 wheel studs (1). Grip with tire iron (2) in so doing. See Fig 2 .
  7. If necessary, disconnect cable from clips (1). Release nut of control arm at wheel carrier. Grip at hexagon head. See Figure .
  8. Unfasten nut from traction strut at wheel carrier. If necessary, grip at hexagon head. See Fig 3 .
  9. Remove wheel carrier.
  10. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure tapered pins and holes are free of grease. Replace nuts. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. When pulling in axle shaft, lightly oil axle shaft splines and insert into drive flange splines. Screw special tool (33 2 118) onto axle shaft. Screw on special tool (33 2 116) with 5 wheel studs (1). Install axle shaft with special tool (33 2 115). See Fig 4 .
  12. Replace nut for swinging arm and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  13. Replace collar nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Secure collar nut by calking it at flat area of shaft. See Fig 1 .
