Spring Strut Shock Absorber: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove wheel.
  2. Remove rear left or right wheel arch trim.
  3. Support trailing arm with a lifter (1). See Fig 1 .
  4. Release nut (1) and detach stabilizer link from stabilizer bar. See Fig 2 .
  5. Release screw (1) and detach shock absorber from wheel carrier. See Fig 3 .
  6. Release screw (1). Carefully detach traction strut (2) from trailing arm. See Fig 4 .
  7. Remove luggage compartment wheel arch trim. Detach shock absorber from thrust bearing.
  8. On vehicles with EDC, note position of EDC line (1). See Fig 5 .
  9. On vehicles with EDC, unlock plug connection for EDC line (1). See Fig 6 .
  10. Lower garage jack. Pass spring strut downwards between traction strut and trailing arm and feed out towards top. See Fig 7 .
    11. WARNING: Prior to each use, check special tools for functional capability. Do not use special tools which are damaged. Do not make any modifications to special tools. The special tools are solely intended for tensioning and relieving the tension on suspension springs. Never tighten or untighten special tools with impact screwdrivers.
  11. Clamp special tool (31 3 341) at guide (1) in vise. Use special tool (31 3 357) and matching protective inserts. Locking pins must be felt and heard snapping into place. Spring retainers must be inserted from chamfer of special tool (31 3 341). See Fig 8 .
  12. Place lower and upper windings of coil spring between spring retainers. See Fig 9 .
  13. Release nut and remove spring strut shock absorber unit. See Fig 10 .
