Axle Carrier: Removal
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels.
- Support exhaust system with special tool (31 2 220). See Fig 1 .
- Release nuts of flanges on both exhaust manifolds with integrated catalytic converter. See Fig 2 .
- Release nuts. See Fig 3 .
- Release nuts and remove reinforcement plate. See Fig 4 .
- Release nut and detach rubber element from holder. See Fig 5 .
- Release nut and remove holder of rear muffler. See Fig 6 .
- Release nut, remove holder on tailpipe, detach hose from vacuum unit and carefully lower exhaust system. See Fig 7 .
- Remove rear heat shield.
- Remove drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
- Remove ABS speed sensors. See appropriate article in BRAKES.
- Remove brake calipers on left and right and tie back to body.
- Remove handbrake Bowden cables from wheel brake.
- Remove connector from ride height sensor if necessary.
- Unfasten hose clip and detach hose from fuel filler pipe and seal off.
- Remove left and right stabilizer. See STABILIZER .
- Detach spring struts on left and right from wheel carrier. See SPRING STRUT SHOCK ABSORBER .
- Support rear axle carrier with special tools (00 2 030/040) and (33 4 227/228). See Fig 8 . Insert special tool (33 4 228) at front into bore. See Fig 9 . Place special tool (33 4 227) on transverse tube. See Fig 10 .
- Release rubber mount screws (1, 2) on left and right and lower axle carrier. See Fig 11 .
