Steering Spindle (Lower Section): Removal
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2004 BMW 745i, 2004 BMW 745Li, 2003 BMW 745i, 2003 BMW 745Li, and 2002 BMW 745i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove engine underguard if necessary.
- Release upper screw from universal joint with corrugated tube. See Fig 1 .
- Remove lower section of steering spindle from universal joint with corrugated tube.
- Remove trim panel for pedal assembly. See TRIM FOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY .
- Remove air duct in footwell.
- Release clamping screw (1) on universal joint. Detach lower section of steering spindle from steering column and remove. See Figure .
- To Install, reverse removal procedure.
- Connect lower section of steering spindle to steering column. Replace clamping screw (1). Make sure universal joint is correctly seated. Clamping screw must rest in locking groove of steering column. See Fig 2 . Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect lower section of steering spindle and universal joint with corrugated tube. They can only be joined in one position. See Fig 1 . Replace clamping screw and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- After installation, turn steering wheel left and right to full lock. AIRBAG warning lamp must not light up.
NOTE:
If the same steering spindle is reinstalled, mark position of universal joint in relation to steering column.
