Removal & Installation (Up To 3/99)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 42 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW M5, 2002 BMW 540i, and 2002 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect battery and cover negative pole or terminal.
  2. Release both screws (Torx T 27/30). See Fig 1.
  3. Remove connector from squib (1), horn (2) and steering wheel switch (3). See Fig 2.
  4. CAUTION: AIRBAG unit must be placed with padded cushion facing upward.
  5. Remove AIRBAG unit. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
  6. CAUTION: When screw is unfastened, torsion spring (F) cuts in which secures contact ring in central setting. The steering wheel must not be moved if screw is not tightened. Contact ring will be damaged. See Fig 3.
  7. Turn steering wheel to straight ahead position (markings on steering gear and steering spindle aligned). Unscrew bolt. Mark position of steering wheel relative to steering spindle. Pull off steering wheel.
  8. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  9. Adjust contact ring if necessary. Press down spring (F). Determine center position of contact ring by halving the total number of turns. Ensure marks are aligned (1). Release spring (F). See Fig 4.
  10. When attaching steering wheel, lockpin (1) must engage in recess (2). See Fig 5. Tighten steering wheel bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  11. When installing Torx screws, do not pinch wires. See Fig 1. Tighten screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
