51 16 210 Removing and installing/replacing trim for preselector lever (gearshift lever)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW Z4, 2007 BMW Z4, 2006 BMW Z4, 2005 BMW Z4, and 2004 BMW Z4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools required:

00 9 341

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Apply parking brake.
Version with automatic transmission: Move selector lever into N position.
Version with manual transmission: Engage neutral.

NOTE: Removing the trim for the preselector lever or gearshift lever is virtually identical. The illustrations show the removal of the trim for the preselector lever in versions with automatic transmissions.

Provisionally fit special tool 00 9 341 as illustrated.

Unclip trim for preselector lever (2) from mounting points (3) all round in direction of arrow.

Lift trim for preselector lever (2), disconnected associated plug connections and remove trim for preselector lever (2).

NOTE: If necessary, pull off knob for preselector lever or shift lever (1) in direction of arrow.

Installation:

Make sure retainers (3) are correctly seated in their mounts.

Replacement:

Remove switch for hazard warning system/central locking. 61 31 079 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING SWITCH FOR HAZARD WARNING SYSTEM/CENTRAL LOCKING .

Unclip selector lever cover (2) from catches (1) all round and remove from trim for preselector lever (4).
