Front Axle (With Spring Struts): Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove front wheels.
  2. Draw off hydraulic fluid for power steering from tank. Do not re-use. Observe waste-disposal regulations.
  3. Remove acoustic cover.
  4. Raise hood lid. Have a second person hold the hood. Push retainer spring to end of gas spring strut. Remove gas spring strut from ball head. See Fig 1 .
  5. NOTE: Special tool can be used in both directions.
  6. Slide special tool (51 2 180) (1) over housing (2) of gas spring strut. Clip ball socket of special tool on ball stud and secure engine hood in service position. Proceed in similar fashion on other side. See Fig 2 .
  7. Assemble special tool (00 0 200) with special tool (00 0 201/202/203/204/208) and install.
  8. Secure special tool (11 0 000) to front and rear lifting eyes and to special tool (00 0 200). See Fig 3 .
  9. NOTE: The supports (1) of special tool (00 0 208) must rest on the bolt connection of both side walls.
  10. Tighten screws (1, 2). See Fig 4 .
  11. Suspend engine in installation position. Partially remove air routing boxes on left and right.
  12. Remove stabilizer link on spring strut. See STABILIZER  .
  13. Remove left and right brake calipers, lines remain connected, and tie back to body.
  14. Release screws (1) and remove reinforcement plate. See Fig 5 .
  15. Disconnect ARS lines, if necessary.
  16. Disconnect ABS pulse sensor on left and right. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK/TRACTION CONTROL article in BRAKES.
  17. CAUTION: There will no longer be an end stop once the steering spindle has been separated from the steering gear. The steering wheel can be turned without restriction.
  18. Move steering wheel to straight ahead position. Secure steering wheel with steering wheel arrester. Remove clamping screw and detach universal joint from steering gear. See Fig 6 .
  19. Disconnect line from ride level sensor.
  20. On vehicles with ARS, detach ARS pressure line from vane pump and seal off connections. Release nut on holder. See Fig 7 .
  21. Open fast-release coupling (1). On vehicles with ARS, release union nut (2). See Fig 8 .
  22. On vehicles without ARS, detach pressure line from vane pump and seal off connections.
  23. Release nut on holder. See Fig 9 .
  24. CAUTION: Spring strut shock absorbers must not tilt or hang outwards. Damage to ball joints and wheel bearings could result.
  25. Detach spring struts on left and right from wheel arch.
  26. Support front axle support with garage jack (00 2 030/040) and special tool (31 4 011/012). See Fig 10 .
  27. Insert special tool (31 4 012) in rear openings in front axle support. See Fig 11 .
  28. Insert special tool (31 4 011) in front bores in front axle support. See Fig 12 .
  29. Remove front axle support from engine support on left and right. Lower garage jack.
