Coil Spring & Shock Absorber: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove front wheel.
  2. Remove stabilizer link. See Fig 1 .
  3. Unfasten nut. Expand swivel bearing with special tool (31 2 200). See Fig 2 .
  4. Lift up cap. Remove spring strut support bearing from wheel arch. See Fig 3 .
  5. On models with EDC, unlock plug (1) and disconnect. Lift up cap. See Fig 4 .
  6. Disconnect EDC cable. See Fig 5 .
    7. CAUTION: Do not release spring strut from swivel bearing with rotary motions. This can cause damage to shock absorber. Do not damage wheel arch. Use a protective cover.
  7. On all models, press swivel bearing down until spring strut shock absorber can be tilted outwards from wheel arch. With assistance of a second person, remove spring strut shock absorber. See Fig 6 .
  8. Pull spring strut out of swivel bearing. See Fig 7 .
    9. WARNING: Before they are used, always check that special tools work properly. Use only suitable spring retainers. Never use an impact wrench for tensioning/releasing purposes. Keep protective inserts clean and free from oil and grease. It is absolutely essential to use special tool (31 3 369) which is the protective insert for E65. Failure to do so exposes the risk of the spring detaching from special tool (31 3 341) during tension/relieving operation. Danger to life.
  9. Clamp special tool (31 3 341) at guide (1) in vise. Slide in special tools (31 3 352) and (31 3 369). Locking pins (2) must be felt and heard snapping into place. See Fig 8 .
  10. Position coil spring between spring holders. See Fig 9 .
    11. WARNING: Do not compress coils to full extent.
  11. Tighten down coil springs until stress on the thrust bearing is just relieved.
  12. Grip with wrench and release nut with special tool (31 2 210). Remove spring strut. See Fig 10 .
  13. If a new coil spring is installed, release tension on special tool (31 3 341) and remove coil spring. The special tool must not be tightened or untightened with an impact wrench.
