Coil Spring & Shock Absorber: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place a new coil spring with, if necessary, a new spring pad in spring retainer. Make sure end of spring, spring pad and spring plate are positively engaged. It is absolutely essential to use the special tool (31 3 369) (2) designed for the E65. The end of the spring must be flush with the end of spring retainer (line) (1). See Fig 1 .
  2. Tension coil spring. Do not compress coils to full extent.
  3. Check cap (1) and replace if necessary. Check auxiliary spring (2) and protective tube (3) and replace if necessary. When positioning protective tube, avoid pressure points and ensure perfect folding. See Fig 2 .
  4. Insert spring strut in coil spring and upper spring retainer.
  5. Replace self-locking nut and tighten onto piston rod until flush. Coil spring must fit positively in lower spring plate/spring pad. Slowly relieve tension on coil spring until it is fully resting in lower spring plate. Do not fully relieve tension on coil spring. Tighten down nut with special tool (31 2 210). See Fig 3 . Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Release tension on special tool only until spring coils can move freely. Remove spring strut.
  7. Installation is reverse of removal.
  8. Install spring strut shock absorber support bearing to wheel arch and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Press swivel bearing upwards to stop with workshop hoist and note marking of installation position. Replace self-locking nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Install stabilizer link, replace self-locking nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Install front wheel and tighten wheel lug bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
