12 41 020 Removing and installing/replacing starter motor (Z3 / M54)

Observe instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. Refer to 12 00 ... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY  .

Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.

Perform following tasks from above:

Release nuts (1) and disconnect battery positive leads from starter motor.

Installation: 

Tightening torque, 12 41 4AZ. Refer to 12 41 STARTER AND MOUNTING PARTS .

Release nuts (1).

Installation: 

Tightening torque, 12 41 4AZ. Refer to 12 41 STARTER AND MOUNTING PARTS .

Detach leads (2) from starter motor.

Detach cable duct (1) of B+ lead from firewall.

NOTE: Detach heater valve from bracket in order to improve accessibility for torque tool (2).

Release starter motor screw (2) from upper vehicle side of transmission.

Tightening torque, 12 41 1AZ. Refer to 12 41 STARTER AND MOUNTING PARTS .

Starter motor screw (1) is accessible from lower vehicle side. Working from transmission output end, release starter motor screw (1) with a long extension and a universal joint.

Tightening torque, 12 41 1AZ. Refer to 12 41 STARTER AND MOUNTING PARTS .

Lift out starter motor.

Installation: 

Check starter motor pinion and ring gear for damage.
