32 34 020 Removing and installing / replacing airbag unit

Incorrect handling may result in triggering of the airbag unit and thereby cause serious injury.

IMPORTANT: Steering wheel must be replaced if airbag unit has been triggered! Refer to 32 33 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING STEERING WHEEL or 32 33 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING STEERING WHEEL (BASIC STEERING WHEEL) .

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Disconnect battery negative lead, refer to 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY

Release screws on both sides (Torx socket T 30).

Installation:

Do not pinch wires.

Tightening torque, 32 34 1AZ. Refer to STEERING AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

IMPORTANT: Airbag unit may only be set down with the airbag itself facing upwards.

Disconnect plug connections (1, 2,).

Remove airbag unit.

Replacement only:

Remove switch (1) for multifunction steering wheel. Refer to 61 31 224 REPLACING SWITCH ON IMPACT CUSHION FOR LEFT OR RIGHT AIRBAG .
