32 31 070 Removing and installing/renewing steering spindle lower section (N63)

IMPORTANT:
If the lower section of the steering spindle is separated from the steering gear/steering spindle middle section, the steering-column switch cluster may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
Secure steering wheel from turning!

Necessary preliminary tasks
- Remove engine cover
- Remove left intake silencer housing
- Remove EXPANSION TANK FROM BODY
and place to one side.
Pay attention to plug connection on coolant expansion tank and oil tank.
- Remove POWER STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR TANK FROM BODY and place to one side.
- Remove WATER VALVE FOR HEATER .
Release clamping screws (1).
Push steering spindle (2) together and remove.
Installation:
Clean thread to remove all remnants of screw securing adhesive.
Replace clamping screws.
Connect steering spindle first to steering gear and then to steering spindle middle section.
Clamping screw must rest in steering gear groove or steering spindle middle section.
Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ .
No subsequent buckling permitted!
After installation
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to full lock. The airbag warning lamp must not light up in the process.
- Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment/adjustment for active front steering . See 61 31 996 CARRYING OUT STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT or 32 10 005 ADJUSTMENT FOR ACTIVE FRONT STEERING .
- Check directional stability of car
