11 37 006 Removing and installing/replacing left eccentric shaft (N62 to 9/03)
(Cylinder Bank 5 To 8)
Remove servomotor for left eccentric shaft.
Remove ignition coils on cylinder bank 5 to 8.
Remove spark plugs on cylinder bank 5 to 8.
Remove left cylinder head cover.
Remove inlet and exhaust adjustment unit on left side.
Remove left inlet camshaft. Refer to 11 31 032 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT INLET CAMSHAFT (N62 TO 9/03) .
Removal:
Removal of eccentric shaft is described separately from installation.
Carefully tilt bearing shell (1) to one side and simultaneously remove towards top.
Lift out eccentric shaft (1).
Removal of magnet wheel (if necessary):
It is very easy to mix up left and right or front and rear on the eccentric shaft.
If necessary, mark the side on which the magnet wheel is fitted.
Release screw and remove magnet wheel (1).
Removal of lever (2) with roller (if necessary):
Grip lever (2) with roller at dihedral.
Release screw (1) and remove lever (2) with roller from eccentric shaft.
Carefully press needle bearings (1) apart at split position only to such an extent that they can be removed from eccentric shaft.
Carefully press bearing shell (1) to one side and simultaneously remove towards top.
Installation:
Installation of eccentric shaft is described separately from removal.
Version Up To 2/03 Of Cylinder Bank 5 To 8:
In the version up to 2/03, the eccentric shafts are different for cylinders 1 to 4 and 5 to 8 and must not be mixed up.
The eccentric shaft of cylinder bank 5 to 8 has the part number 7 513 755 stamped between cylinders 5 and 6 and has no "flat area" on the collar between cylinders 5 / 6 and 7 / 8.
Version Up To 2/03 Of Cylinder Bank 1 To 4:
The eccentric shaft of cylinder bank 1 to 4 has the part number 7 513 754 stamped between cylinders 3 and 4 and a "flat area" on the collar between cylinders 1 and 2.
If none of the markings described above are present, then the eccentric shaft will be a new-version shaft.
The new-version eccentric shafts are identical parts.
Depending on the side on which the lever for the torsion spring and the magnet wheel are fitted, the eccentric shafts are used for cylinders 1 to 4 or 5 to 8.
Carefully press needle bearings (1) apart at split position only to such an extent that they can be fitted over eccentric shaft.
Cylinder Bank 5 To 8:
As shown in the illustration, the machined surface (3) on the eccentric must point upwards and the groove in the eccentric shaft must be pointed upwards at an angle.
Align lever (2) with digits 5-8 pointing to groove in eccentric shaft and insert. Insert screw (1).
Grip lever (2) with roller at dihedral. Tighten down screw (1).
Installation of magnet wheel:
Magnet wheel (1) is secured with a lug in groove in eccentric shaft.
Insert screw (2) and tighten down.
Tightening torque, refer to 11 37 1AZ in ENGINE - SPECIAL TOOLS - 5-SERIES (E60) .
Insert bearing shells (1) into bearing bracket so that it is secured in bore (2).
Lubricate bearing shells (1) with engine oil.
Cylinder Bank 5 To 8:
Install eccentric shaft as shown in illustration.
Lubricate bearing shells (1) with engine oil. Install bearing shells (1).
Bearing shells (1) must snap audibly into place.
Check correct position of bearing shells (1).
Install left inlet camshaft. Refer to 11 31 032 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT INLET CAMSHAFT (N62 TO 9/03) .
Assemble engine.
