54 34... Checks On The Soft Top Linkage Before Fitting The Soft Top Cover

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2013 BMW 128i, 2012 BMW 128i, 2011 BMW 128i, 2010 BMW 135i, and 2010 BMW 128i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

WARNING: Soft top becomes pressureless without a warning signal. For all repair work, secure soft top with a suitable aid against collapsing. Ensure that the support is centered and broad. Ignition must remain switched off during the repair work. If this is not observed, preliminary damage to the hydraulic valves or a switch-off into overload protection cannot be excluded. Follow the diagnosis instructions.

Measure 1:

Identifying feature:

A possible complaint is in the form of a mark on the soft top cover.

Measure to prevent sporadic trapping of the soft top cover: Repair kit: 54 34 7 190 757  .

Remedy:  Replace installed limit positions with constructionally modified components on both sides. 1. Previous limit position. 2. New limit position.

Move soft top into position shown. Support both sides of soft top and soft top compartment lid with suitably broad aid to ensure that soft top is held in a stable position and does not fold up from front to rear.

NOTE: Place protective mats in passenger compartment to protect it against swarf, removed rivets and damage.

Drill out rivet (1) on left and right and remove limit positions (2). Apply corrosion protection if necessary.

Measure 2:

Identifying feature:  A possible complaint is in the form of a protruding upper thread. Refinish the seal carrier (main pillar)

NOTE: The seal carrier is cropped by approx. 6 mm and the outer edges are rounded.

Check seal carrier distance: Measure distance from lower edge of elongated hole to lower edge of seal carrier. Dimension (x) can have the following values: - 40 mm. Previous version = crop. - 34 mm Corresponds to new version = Do not shorten.

Dimension (X) = mark 6 mm parallel to lower edge. Remove the seal carrier. Crop seal carrier to dimension. Round outer edges with file and deburr interface.

IMPORTANT: Sealing carrier may be damaged by improper clamping. Protect sealing carrier with suitable auxiliary materials during clamping. All sharp edges must be rounded. After completing the work, apply corrosion protection.

Measure 3:

Identifying feature: Possible complaint in the form of damage in the C-pillar area. Measure against damage of soft top cover in area of C-pillar: Repair kit: 54 34 7 311 688

IMPORTANT: Please observe correct routing of the bungee cord and tension cables as shown on the graphic.

Double-up the rubber band (2) and attach to the soft-top bow using a rivet (3). Double-up rubber band (2) and rivet to C-pillar together with guide lug (1).

Bend limit position (1) forward as shown. The limit position (1) must lie parallel to the cutting edge of the main bearing after bending.

IMPORTANT: Apply corrosion protection!
