Removal & Installation (Left)

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Open fins on right fresh air grille. Attach Grill Extractor (64 1 030) on both side and pull grill out slightly. Close fins and remove right fresh air grille. Using Disassembly Aid (00 9 341), pry up control display fresh air grille. Grip through openings, pull up and remove control display trim. Pull center fresh air grille toward rear of vehicle and remove.
  3. Unclip instrument cluster trim by applying light upward thumb pressure to left and right wood trim. Remove screws from inside center fresh air grill opening. Remove nut from right side of wood trim panel. Using Fishbone (00 9 3210) inserted through fresh air grille openings, pry wood trim panel from instrument panel.
  4. Remove 2 screws and pull center instrument panel trim panel out slightly. See Figure . Disconnect electrical connectors and remove trim panel. Open fins on left fresh air grille. Attach Grill Extractor (64 1 030) on both side and pull grill out slightly. Close fins and remove left fresh air grille.
  5. Remove nut securing left wood trim panel. Using Fishbone (00 9 3210) inserted through fresh air grille opening, pry wood trim panel from instrument panel. Remove 2 screws and pull lighting control unit out slightly. Disconnect electrical connectors and remove control unit.
  6. Remove 4 screws and lower pedal assembly trim panel enough to disconnect footwell light connector, then remove trim panel. Turn left knee air bag module harness connector counterclockwise 30 degrees and remove from holder, then disconnect connector. Remove 3 lower and 3 upper mounting screws and remove left knee air bag module.
  7. To install, reverse removal procedure. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
