Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 BMW 545i, 2004 BMW 530i, and 2004 BMW 525i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Using Disassembly Aid (00 9 341), unclip rear insert at retaining points, then pull back in direction of arrow. See Fig 1 . Disconnect harness connectors and remove insert.
  2. Detach clips at bottom of fresh air grille and remove grille. Apply hand brake. Place gearshift selector in Neutral, manual and automatic transmission. Grasp gearshift lever knob and pull straight up with forceful jerk. DO NOT twist knob. Press sides of gearshift lever boot together and fold boot up over gearshift lever.
  3. Remove handbrake lever boot. Remove mounting screws from left and right front lower corners of center console. Lift center console up from rear, while pulling rearward. Work console over handbrake lever and remove. Remove rear middle ventilation duct, if necessary. Disconnect center vehicle sensor connector, remove 3 mounting screws and remove sensor.
  4. Using Disassembly Aid (00 9 341), unclip gearshift lever trim panel, disconnect harness connectors and remove trim panel. Carefully pry off side trim from left and right side of center console. Working through opening in back of console, remove 2 screws and disconnect harness connectors.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten center vehicle sensor screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Perform appropriate coding/programming using proprietary BMW DIS tester as necessary. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
