Automatic Transmission: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2008 BMW 760Li, 2007 BMW 760Li, 2006 BMW 760i, 2006 BMW 760Li, and 2005 BMW 760i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.
  1. Disconnect battery. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .
  2. Remove heater bulkhead. See HEATER BULKHEAD  .
  3. Hold engine in transmission removal position:
    • N73: Position transmission lifter underneath.
    • All others: with Special Tool ( 00 0 200).
  4. Remove complete exhaust system. For N62 engine, see REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N62) . For N73 engine, see REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N73) .
  5. Remove oxygen monitor sensors.
  6. Remove front engine underguard.
  7. Remove reinforcement plate.
  8. Release screws and remove transmission underbody protection (1). See Fig 1 .
  9. Remove heat shields (1) and (2). See Fig 2 .
  10. Unfasten nut. Remove cable (1). See Fig 3 .
  11. Release screw (1). See Fig 4 . Pull hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler out of transmission housing. N73 only: Release holder for oil lines on engine.
  12. Turn engine using central bolt in direction of rotation until a torque converter retaining screw is visible in opening. See Fig 5 . Release retaining screws with Special Tool (24 1 110). Turn engine further and release remaining 3 screws.
  13. Unlock plug (1) and disconnect. See Fig 6 .
  14. Unclip cable holder (1) from transmission housing. See Fig 7 . Unclip cable from transmission.
    15. CAUTION: Humans can only detect a discharge starting from a level of approximately 3000 V. The danger threshold for electrical components already starts from a level of approximately 100 V. Statically charged persons can discharge by touching electrical components. DO NOT touch pins or multi-pin connectors directly! Touch electrical components by their housings only.
  15. Perform following tasks:
    • Unlock and disconnect mechatronics control module plug (1) by turning. See Fig 8 .
    • Insert Special Tool (24 2 390) in sealing sleeve. See Fig 9 .
  16. Support transmission with Special Tools (24 5 306, 24 5 301) and (00 2 030). See Fig 11 . Set up Special Tool (24 5 306):
    • All supports to "B".
    • Supports 3 and 4 are at rear of transmission.
    • Support lettering points forwards.
  17. To secure torque converter against slipping out, install Special Tool (24 4 131) (basic unit) with corresponding blades in opening of transmission housing and clamp: Blades for M54, N62 (24 4 132). See Fig 12 .
  18. Prepare Special Tool (24 4 161) (1) with corresponding shaped sections: shaped section for N73 (24 4 162). See Fig 13 .
  19. Insert Special Tool (24 4 160) into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1). See Fig 14 . Twist in screw (2) and clamp down. Then tighten down screw (1) briefly.
  20. Remove transmission cross-member. See Fig 15 .
  21. On N73 only: Release holder so that lines of power steering (1) do not collide with line from transmission oil cooler (2). See Fig 16 .
  22. If necessary, unlock or lock transmission lock. from inside the car, refer to Owner's Manual "Manually unlocking transmission lock". Underneath car, remove underbody panelling. If unlocking, press lever (1) towards rear. See Fig 17 . Clamp lever firmly if permanent unlocking is desired. To lock, release lever (1) or release clamping. Remove propeller shaft. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT . Release center bearing. Tie propeller shaft to one side.
  23. DO NOT lower transmission too far, and take care to avoid collisions. Unfasten screws of transmission-to-engine. See Fig 18 .
