Front Axle Carrier: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 12 other vehicles, including the 2007 BMW 550i, 2007 BMW 530i, 2007 BMW 525i, 2006 BMW 550i, and 2006 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Remove luggage compartment floor trim. Disconnect battery negative lead.
  2. Draw off hydraulic fluid from fluid reservoir. Dispose of old fluid observing all waste-disposal regulations.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove reinforcement plate. See Fig 1. Remove steering gear cover at side. Remove front stabilizer bar. See FRONT STABILIZER BAR .
  4. Remove tie rod end from swivel bearing. See TIE ROD .
  5. Remove tension strut on front axle carrier. See TENSION STRUTS .
  6. Remove control arm on front axle carrier. See CONTROL ARM .
  7. Disconnect hydraulic lines from power steering gear-to-front axle carrier and tie back.
  8. Open and secure engine hood in service position with special tool. Remove engine cover. Remove fresh air duct on left and right. Assemble Special Tool (00 0 200) with Special Tools (00 0 201/202/203/204/208) and install. See Fig 2. Secure special tool (11 0 020) to front and rear engine lifting eyes and to special tool (00 0 200). Supports (1) of special tool (00 0 208) must rest on screw connection (2) of both side panels. See Fig 3.
  9. Tighten screws (1, 2). See Fig 4.
  10. Release engine mounts at top left and right. Raise engine with Special Tool (00 0 200) about .4" (10 mm).
  11. Remove lower section of steering spindle from steering gear. See STEERING SPINDLE LOWER SECTION .
  12. Remove return line for power steering/Dynamic Drive from radiator. If necessary, unlock and disconnect plug from ride-height sensor. Disconnect line from front axle carrier.
  13. On vehicles with Dynamic Drive, draw off and dispose of hydraulic fluid from fluid reservoir. Observe all waste disposal regulations. Turn front wheel to left. Remove screws and remove bottom right wheel arch trim under assembly underside protection at side rear.
  14. Remove nut (1) for Dynamic Drive return line. See Fig 5. Remove nut (2) for Dynamic Drive pressure line. Remove nuts (3) for pressure lines to front axle oscillating motor. Release cable ties for wiring harness (4).
  15. On vehicles with active front steering, disconnect plug connections (1) and (2). See Fig 6. Cut cable ties open and lay wiring harness on front axle carrier.
  16. Unlock plug (1) and remove. See Fig 7. Remove line from retainer (2).
  17. Insert Special Tools (31 4 012) into corresponding receptacles of Special Tool (00 2 040). Align Special Tool (00 2 040) as illustrated to front axle support. See Fig 8. Ensure when raising that Special Tools (31 4 012) are correctly inserted in rear recesses on front axle carrier. Support front axle carrier in rear area by raising Special Tool (00 2 030). Position Special Tool (33 3 274) on floor jack mounting.
  18. Remove front axle carrier screws (1) and (2). See Fig 9.
  19. Carefully lower front axle carrier using Special Tool (00 2 030). Pay attention to power steering hoses and lines when lowering. Hoses and lines must not be tensioned or bent. Lowering dimension (A) is dependent on equipment specification and is about 3.9" (10 cm) between front axle carrier (1) and engine carrier (2). See Fig 10. On vehicles with Dynamic Drive, if front axle needs to be lowered more than 3.9" (10 cm), detach pressure lines from oscillating motor of front axle. Remove pipe holder screw and move pipe holder towards rear. See Fig 11.
  20. If necessary, remove heat shield. Remove left engine mount/mounting bracket and right engine mount.
  21. If necessary, remove power steering gear (2) with wiring harness (3). See Fig 12.
  22. Remove vehicle jack support. Take front axle carrier down and place on a suitable surface.
