Brake Linings (Front): Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 BMW 545i and 2004 BMW 545i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: New brake linings may only be installed if brake disc thickness is greater than or equal to minimum brake disc thickness.
  1. Observe minimum brake disc thickness of brake linings. See BRAKE LINING  under TESTING. Clean brake linings. Do NOT apply grease to brake pad backplate.
  2. Check dust sleeve (1) for damage. See Fig 1. Clean mounting face (2) of brake piston and apply a thin coating of anti-squeak compound. Dust sleeve must NOT come into contact with anti-squeak compound as this may cause dust sleeve to swell.
  3. Clean mounting faces (1) and (2) of brake lining hammer heads on brake caliper housing and coat with anti-squeak compound. See Fig 2. Grease contact surfaces on brake caliper at top and bottom.
  4. Clean mounting face (3) of brake caliper and apply a thin coating of anti-squeak compound. See Fig 3. Clean brake caliper holder at hammerhead guides and apply a thin coating of anti-squeak compound.
  5. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Only clean guide screws. Do NOT grease. Check threads. Replace all guide screws which are not in perfect condition. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Attach retaining spring (1) at top and bottom and then allow retaining lug (2) to engage in recess of brake caliper housing. See Figure.
  7. After completing work, fully depress brake pedal several times so that brake linings contact brake discs. If installing new brake linings, brake fluid level must be brought up to MAX marking. Hold ignition key for at least 30 seconds in position "1" without starting engine to clear fault entry in RAM. This prevents brake wear indicator lamp from illuminating again.
