23 00 018 Removing and installing transmission (GS6-53BZ)

IMPORTANT: After completion of work, check GEARBOX OIL LEVEL .
Use only the APPROVED GEARBOX OIL .

Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the manual transmission.

NOTE: When removing and installing the transmission, without fail use the transmission bracket 23 4 050 and a jack to support the engine.

Failure to comply with this instruction may result in preliminary damage to the clutch and splined shaft.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Remove heat shields (1/2)

Release and disconnect plugs (1) from holders.

Release and disconnect plugs (1) from holders.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Cut open cable tie (2).

Remove retaining plate.

Release screw (1).

Bend plate (2) to one side.

Unscrew nut (3).

Remove holder (4).

Release screw (1).

Remove crankshaft sensor (2).

Release screw (3).

Bend plate (4) to one side.

Unlock and disconnect plug (1).

Unlock plug (1) from reversing light switch and disconnect.

Release cable from retainers.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque: see Fig 9 and TRANSMISSION DESIGNATIONS .

Supporting transmission: 

Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050 , 23 0 132 , 00 2 030 .

Secure transmission with tensioning strap (1).

Tasks are described in UNIVERSAL TRANSMISSION BRACKET .

After completion of work, check TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL .

Release bolts (1) and nuts (2) and remove cross-member.

Tightening torque: see Fig 9 and TRANSMISSION DESIGNATIONS .

IMPORTANT:

Bending the propeller shaft by an excessive angle can cause premature damage to the joint/propeller shaft!

Tie up propeller shaft to underbody.

NOTE: Pressure line of clutch slave cylinder remains connected.
IMPORTANT: Relieve tension on clutch slave cylinder slowly; otherwise air will be drawn in through sealing cup.

Release nuts and remove clutch slave cylinder.

Tightening torque: 22 Nm

Lever out retainer (1).

Disengage shift rod (2).

Installation note: 

Grease shift rod.

Grease, refer to MANUAL TRANSMISSION - OPERATING FLUIDS .

Make sure shims (3) are in correct position.

Unlock bearing pin (1) in direction of arrow and remove.

Lift out gearshift arm.

Installation note: 

Grease bearing pins (1).

Grease, refer to MANUAL TRANSMISSION - OPERATING FLUIDS .

Unlock plug (1) of zero-gear sensor (ON TRANSMISSION) and disconnect.

Release remaining eight bolts (1/2).

IMPORTANT: Bolts (2) are longer than bolts (1)

Tightening torque: see Fig 18 and TRANSMISSION DESIGNATIONS .

NOTE: Bolt (3) must not be released.
Bolt (3) serves to secure the starter motor.
IMPORTANT: Do not suspend the transmission from the transmission input shaft during removal and installation as this will deform the clutch plate. Pull out transmission towards rear and remove.

Installation note: 

Check that fitting sleeves (1) are correctly seated.

Replace damaged fitting sleeves.

NOTE: When removing and installing the transmission, without fail use the transmission bracket 23 4 050 and a jack to support the engine.

Failure to comply with this instruction may result in preliminary damage to the clutch and splined shaft.

Installation note: 

Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. If grease is sticky, clean input shaft and REPLACE CLUTCH PLATE .

Check clutch plate for friction rust in splines and REPLACE if necessary.

Remove any grease and lining abrasion from splines of clutch plate by mechanical means (with a cloth).
