Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 BMW Z8, 2002 BMW Z8, 2001 BMW Z8, and 2000 BMW Z8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Open convertible top. In event of a technical fault, open convertible top by hand. See EMERGENCY CLOSING OPERATION  . Remove side trim panel at rear left and right. See SIDE TRIM PANEL  . Press off panel on left and right at inside "B" pillar. Slide locking clip upward. Unclip hydraulic leg with Special Tool (009319) toward inside. See Fig 1 . Undo adhesive tape on hydraulic lines. Pull retainer into front engagement position. See Fig 2 .
    CAUTION: Hydraulic fluid may emerge from the removed lines and open connections on the hydraulic cylinder. Protect components and workplace with appropriate materials (e.g. cloths). Have cloth ready to wipe up escaping fluid.

  2. Unclip hydraulic cylinder. Feed hydraulic cylinder with lines as far as possible out of vehicle interior. Remove banjo bolts. Note that hose labeling is Blue (top) and Red (bottom). See Fig 3 . If hydraulic cylinder is replaced or remains removed for an extended period, the holes on the hydraulic cylinder and the line connections must be sealed. See Fig 4 .

  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Always use new hollow banjo bolts and seals. See Fig 5 . Pay attention to routing of lines. Lines must not be kinked. On hydraulic cylinder, release retainer at top and pull retainer at bottom into front engagement position. See Fig 6 . Check fluid level in hydraulic unit.
