23 00 017 Removing And Installing Transmission (GS6-17BZ) N51/N52/N52K/N53
Special tools required:
- 00 2 030 . See 00 2 030 UNIVERSAL HYDRO-LIFTER BASIC UNIT .
- 00 9 120 . See 00 9 130 MAGNET WITH 1/2" CONNECTION .
- 00 9 130 . See 00 9 130 MAGNET WITH 1/2" CONNECTION .
- 21 2 220 . See 21 2 220 GREASE SCRAPER RING .
- 23 4 050 . See 23 4 050 UNIVERSAL TRANSMISSION BRACKET .
Use only the approved transmission oil.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the manual transmission.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery . See 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .
- Remove underbody protection
- Remove complete exhaust system . See EXHAUST SYSTEM COMPLETE (N51) or 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N52, N52K) .
- Remove heat shields
- Support engine
Release screws (1).
Remove exhaust system bracket (2).
Tightening torque, see 23 00 1AZ in 23 00 TRANSMISSION IN GENERAL .
Remove holder (1).
Disconnect connector (1).
Release screws (2).
Remove bracket (3).
Tightening torque, see 23 00 1AZ in 23 00 TRANSMISSION IN GENERAL .

Unclip cable (1) from holder.
Release screw (2) and remove holder (3).
Detach plug (1) from reverse gear switch.
Detach cables from fixtures on transmission.
Supporting transmission:
Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050 , 00 2 030 . See Fig 6.
Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).
Tasks are described in Transmission bracket . See 23... Universal BMW Transmission Take-Up .
After completion of work, check transmission oil level.
Remove screws and nuts.
Remove crossmember (1).
Tightening torque, see 23 71 1AZ/2AZ in 23 71 TRANSMISSION MOUNTS .
- Remove propeller shaft from transmission.
- Release center bearing.
- Tie propeller shaft to one side.
Tasks are described in Removing propeller shaft . See 26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING PROPELLER SHAFT (CARDAN UNIVERSAL JOINT) COMPLETELY .
Release nuts (2) and remove clutch slave cylinder (1).
Tightening torque, see 21 52 5AZ in 21 52 CLUTCH OPERATION (HYDRAULIC) .
Detach locking clip.
Retaining clip must interlock captively with retaining web (1) behind shift rod pin.
Pull shift rod (1) out of shift rod joint (2).
Unlock bearing pin (1) in direction of arrow and remove.
Lift out shift arm (1).
Installation:
Grease bearing pin.
Release screws.
Installation:
Tightening torque, steel screws. See 23 00 1AZ in 23 00 TRANSMISSION IN GENERAL .
Aluminum screws must be replaced.
Tightening torque and angle of rotation
Aluminum screws/bolts, see 23 00 2AZ in 23 00 TRANSMISSION IN GENERAL .
Installation:
Tighten down screws/bolts to specified torque.
Secure special tool and angle of rotation 00 9 120 with magnet 00 9 130 to floor plate. See Fig 15.
Screw down aluminum screws/bolts further according to angle of rotation.

Installation:
Check dowel sleeves (1 and 2) for correct seating.
Replace damaged sleeves.
Ensure correct position of cover plate.
Installation:
Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. If grease is sticky, clean input shaft and replace clutch plate.
Check clutch plate for friction rust in splines and replace if necessary . See 21 21 500 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING CLUTCH (SAC 228) .
Remove any grease and lining abrasion from splines of clutch plate by mechanical means (with a cloth).
Installation:
Greasing specification:
- Remove and clean release bearing and release lever (do not grease).
- Push on grease scraper ring 21 2 221 as far as it will go.
- Grease splines (1) of input shaft with a brush.
- Detach grease scraper ring.
