Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2005 BMW 545i, 2005 BMW 530i, 2005 BMW 525i, 2004 BMW 545i, and 2004 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Remove complete exhaust system (6-cylinder). See EXHAUST SYSTEM. On V8, release exhaust system at catalytic converter and lower. On all models, remove heat shield at front.

Support transmission with a hoist. Remove transmission crossmember. See CROSSMEMBER . Remove transmission bearing block.

Lift off retainer (1). Disconnect shift rod (2). During installation, grease shift rod. Make sure shims (3) are in correct position. See Fig 1 .

Lever spring washer (1) out of groove and push a little toward rear. Press dowel pin (2) upward/downward out of shift rod joint and remove shift rod joint. During installation, grease ball of selector shaft. Replace spring washer (1). See Fig 2 .

During installation, check rubber ring (1) in shift rod joint (2) and replace if necessary. See Fig 3 .
