Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 BMW 545i, 2004 BMW 530i, and 2004 BMW 525i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Fold left sun visor down. Lever out trim on sun visor counter support and remove screw underneath. Lever out cover on sun visor joint and remove screw. Lift out sun visor and disconnect harness connector. Repeat for right sun visor.
  2. Lever out both front mirror lights. Using Trim Panel Wedge (00 9 317), lever out front lamp assembly. Unclip front headliner trim, disconnect harness connectors and remove trim. Release weatherstrip from A-pillar. Unclip and remove A-pillar trim screw cover and remove screw. Unclip center of A-pillar trim. Feed A-pillar trim out of instrument panel trim and remove.
  3. Fold left front grab handle finishers down, remove screws and remove grab handles. Repeat for remaining grab handles. Carefully lever out left front door scuff plate at front retaining points. Pull back on scuff plate and feed out of rear retaining points. Repeat for remaining scuff plates. Partially detach weatherstrip in area of left B-pillar trim. Insert Disassembly Aid (00 9 341) under bottom of lower B-pillar trim. Pull inward then downward on bottom of lower B-pillar trim and remove. Repeat for right lower B-pillar trim.
  4. Remove bolts securing seat belts to left and right outer seat frames. Release expansion rivets at bottom of left upper B-pillar trim. Pull outward on bottom of trim, feed seat belt through opening and remove trim. Repeat for right upper B-pillar trim.
  5. Lever out left C-pillar AIRBAG emblem and remove screw underneath. Unclip and carefully remove rear section of left C-pillar. Detach expansion rivets and clips from left front C-pillar trim. Pull trim inward and upward and remove. Repeat for right C-pillar trims.
  6. Using Trim Panel Remover (00 9 317), lever out dome light assembly. Disconnect harness connector and remove light assembly. Using Disassembly Aid (00 9 341), lever out trim and remove from moulded portion of headliner. Open retaining lugs and remove module for passenger compartment sensor.
  7. Move left rear headrest fully upward. Press in on lock and remove headrest. Repeat for right headrest. Unclip high mount brakelight cover and feed it out sideways, removing it from headliner. Remove right front seat. See FRONT SEATS  .
  8. Open sunroof fully. Working from outside vehicle, remove 10 sunroof mounting screws. Slide floating sunroof shade behind headliner. Using Torx Socket (54 1 230), remove remaining screws between sunroof mounting frame and glass sunroof, then remove screw on mounting bracket at rear.
  9. Move left front seatback to fully reclined position. Press headliner forward out of sliding clips and remove headliner through right rear door.
  10. To install, reverse removal procedure. Perform appropriate coding/programming using proprietary BMW DIS tester as necessary. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
