Removal & Installation

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. The air bag control unit/gateway module is located under right side of instrument panel. Move front passenger seat fully rearward.
- Using Trim Panel Wedge (00 9 317), loosen 3 clips securing right instrument panel bottom trim pane to center console. Remove 3 screws, disconnect footwell light and remove bottom trim panel. Unlock right and left catches and pull air bag control unit with gateway module out slightly. Unlock and disconnect harness connectors, then remove air bag control unit with gateway module.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Perform appropriate coding/programming using proprietary BMW DIS tester as necessary. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
