Removal & Installation

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. The air bag control unit is located under center console, behind ventilation grille.
- Press upward on ventilation grille, then lift cup holder out from side and remove. Slide ventilation grille downward and remove. Remove air bag control unit mounting nuts. Disconnect air bag control unit harness connector and remove control unit.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure ground lead is installed on control unit mounting stud. Tighten air bag control unit mounting nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. If installing a NEW air bag control unit, it must be re-encoded out using proprietary BMW tester.
