Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 BMW 745i and 2002 BMW 745Li. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn steering wheel so one of 2 holes in back of steering wheel is assessable. Insert Spring Release Tool (32 3 170) into one hole at back of steering wheel.
  2. Gently tilt spring release tool upward until it engages ring spring. See Fig 1 . Push in on spring release tool, then pull air bag module away from steering wheel. Turn steering wheel 180 degrees and repeat procedure. Disconnect air bag module electrical connectors and remove module from vehicle.
  3. To install, align air bag module on steering wheel and press in. Ensure wires are not pinched between air bag module and steering wheel. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
