51 71 407 Replacing rear spoiler (M5)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 BMW 545i and 2004 BMW 545i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special Tools Required: 

Minimum object temperature of rear spoiler and body >/= 18° C.

If this temperature is not achieved, the components must be preheated.

Removing Rear Spoiler: 

Carefully detach rear spoiler (1) from rear lid with special tool 00 9 318 (assembly wedge) and hot air blower.

Installation: 

For cleaning, use a fluff-free disposable cloth or a clean cleaning cloth.

Clean adhesive area of rear lid with spirit.

Air drying time at least 1 minute.

Determining Center Of Rear Lid: 

Measure rear lid from left edge to right edge. Mark center of rear lid with adhesive tape.

Also mark center above BMW badge on lower section of rear lid (see adhesive tapes (1) in next illustration).

Determining Fitting Dimensions Of Rear Spoiler:

NOTE: Adhesive tapes (1) must not be situated on bonding surface of rear spoiler.

Mark dimensions (B, C and D) on adhesive tapes (1) on left/right.

Dimensions: 

A = 300 mm.

B = 463.5 mm.

C = 390.3 mm.

D = 373.7 mm.

Fitting Rear Spoiler: 

Retaining tabs (2) must be removed after painting. The inner side of the rear spoiler features markings (1), which in turn must be marked on the outer side of the rear spoiler.

Markings (1) on rear spoiler must match up with markings on rear lid during fitting.

For cleaning the adhesive area, use a fluff-free disposable cloth or a fresh cleaning cloth.

Clean adhesive area on rear spoiler (2) with spirit. Air drying time at least 1 minute.

Adhesive tape (1) must be stuck on at distance "A". Groove (3) serves as a limit marker.

A = 2-3 mm.

There must be in area (4) a 4-6 mm opening in the adhesive tape (1) (condensate water drain).

NOTE: Avoid the creation of bubbles and folds and do not overstretch when attaching the adhesive tapes.

First stick on adhesive tape (1) at side and then stick on tape (2 and 3).

Press down adhesive tapes (1 to 3) firmly.

The adhesion of the adhesive tape is increased considerably by contact pressure therefore press down over the entire area with your thumbs and backs of hands.

Pull off liner* and stick rear spoiler onto rear lid as shown in Fig 6.

*Liner is protective film for adhesive area.

Press down the rear spoiler firmly with the back of your hands over the entire surface, especially the ends.
