Automatic Transmission: Removal

NOTE: Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.
  1. Disconnect battery negative lead. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .
  2. Remove front underbody protection.
  3. Remove reinforcement plate.
  4. Remove center muffler. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING CATALYTIC EXHAUST GAS CONVERTER WITH CENTRE MUFFLER (N62) .
  5. Remove heat shield at front and rear.
  6. Release stabilizer bar on stabilizer link on right and slide forwards. See STABILIZER .
  7. Remove front propeller shaft from front differential. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT .
  8. Remove rear propeller shaft and tie to one side. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT .
  9. Detach plug (1) from speed sensor. See Fig 1. Release screw (2) and remove speed sensor.
  10. Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning. See Fig 2. Release cable from retainers. Insert Special Tool (24 2 390) in sealing sleeve. See Fig 3. DO NOT touch electrical contacts of plug to prevent static discharge from destroying components.
  11. Press in retaining lugs (1) with screwdriver (2), remove cable duct (3) and tie to one side. See Fig 4.
  12. Unlock and detach plugs (1) and (2). See Fig 5.
  13. Grip clamping sleeve (1). See Fig 6. Slacken selector lever nut (2). Detach retainer (3) towards bottom using a screwdriver. Pull cable (4) out of holder.
  14. Release screw (1). See Fig 7. Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to automatic transmission fluid cooler.
  15. Unfasten screws and remove transmission cross-member. See Fig 8.
  16. Support transmission. Support with Special Tools (24 5 307, 24 5 301) and (00 2 030). See Fig 9. Set up Special Tool (24 5 307):
    • Supports 1, 2 and 3 at "B".
    • Support 4 at "A".
    • Supports 3 and 4 are at rear of transmission.
    • Support lettering points forwards.
  17. Remove transfer box.
  18. Turn engine at vibration damper in direction of engine rotation until screw is visible in opening. See Fig 10. Release all screws of torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). Turn engine further and release remaining 3 bolts.
  19. Unfasten screws. See Fig 11. Unflange transmission. Protect torque converter from slipping out.
