Automatic Transmission: Removal

NOTE: Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.
  1. Disconnect battery negative lead. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .
  2. Remove exhaust system. See REPLACING INTERMEDIATE MUFFLER (M62, M54) .
  3. Remove heat shield on right. Unclip cable for oxygen sensors.
  4. Remove reinforcement plate. Remove engine underguard at front.
  5. Release stabilizer and slide forwards. See STABILIZER .
  6. Remove front propeller shaft. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT . Unclip vent line from transmission at bracket (engine).
  7. Release screws and remove exhaust bracket (1). See Fig 1.
  8. Grip clamp bushing (1) and loosen selector lever nut (2). See Fig 2.
  9. Grip cable (1) at hexagon (2). See Fig 3. Unfasten nut (3). Pull cable (1) out of holder.
  10. Unlock attachment plug (1) and disconnect. See Fig 4. Unclip cable (2) from transmission housing.
  11. Release screw (1). See Fig 5. Withdraw hydraulic lines (2) for automatic transmission fluid cooler from transmission housing.
  12. Assemble Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). Special Tool (24 5 301) must be provided with an additional bore hole. See Fig 6. This bore is essential to convert Special Tool (24 5 301) into a stable assembly position. Only in this way is it ensured that transmission unit rests safely on Special Tool (24 5 305) and does not tilt. To do so, insert pivot pin into rear bore of Special Tool (24 5 301). See Fig 7.
  13. Support transmission and transfer case with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). See Fig 8.
  14. Unclip cable for oxygen sensors on transmission cross-member. Unclip cable from transmission. Unfasten screws and remove transmission crossmember. See Fig 9.
  15. Unfasten screws. See Fig 10.
  16. Grip propeller shaft at center bearing and release nuts. See Fig 11. DO NOT let propeller shaft fall into joints. Joints and rubber sleeve on constant-velocity joint can be damaged. See Fig 12.
  17. Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing. Remove from transmission output flange and tie up to one side with a cord or wire.
  18. Release screw (1). See Fig 13. Lever out protective cap (2).
  19. Release retaining screws on torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). See Fig 14. Continue cranking engine at central bolt in direction of rotation. Unscrew Special Tool (24 2 300) from torque converter.
  20. Unfasten screws. See Fig 15. Pull out transmission with transfer case towards rear and lower.
  21. Release transfer case screw connection on transmission and remove transfer case.
