Automatic Transmission: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 BMW X3 and 2004 BMW X3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
Oil cooler and lines must always be flushed before a replacement transmission is installed.
CAUTION:
When joining up engine and transmission, ensure ease of movement of torque converter.
- If replacing transmission, fit shift lever, brackets for cables and retainers from old transmission to new transmission.
- Check dowel sleeves (1) and (2) for correct seating. See Fig 1 . Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
- The sheet metal flywheel is equipped with three recesses for the torque converter retaining tabs. See Fig 2 . When guiding the engine and transmission together the three mounting tabs on the torque converter must be aligned with the three indentations in the sheet metal flywheel. Non-conformance leads to follow-up damage on the automatic transmission. Turning on the torque converter, or engine, is no longer possible after guiding the engine and transmission together and would lead to damage.
- Before joining transmission with engine, remove Special Tools (24 4 131 / 24 4 137).
- Tighten transmission-to-engine screws to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten guard bolt to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Before installing transmission cross-member, turn Special Tool (11 0 250) back with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A" (installation position). See Figure . Installation position, measurement "A" = approx. 36 cm. Tighten cross-member screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten torque converter-to-flywheel screws to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Replace sealing rings on hydraulic lines.
- Install nut for selector lever cable to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Grip clamping sleeve (1). See Fig 3 . Slacken nut (2). Press selector lever (3) forwards into park position. Press cable (4) in direction of arrow and release again. Grip clamping sleeve (1). Tighten down nut (2) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Check whether parking gear is engaged by turning propeller shaft.
- Install propeller shaft. See DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article.
- Install front propeller shaft and tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- To install reinforcement plate, torque screws (2) to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- After completion of work, check transmission fluid level. Top up if necessary.
