Steering Column: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 BMW Z8, 2001 BMW Z8, and 2000 BMW Z8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  .
  2. Remove upper section of steering column trim. See STEERING COLUMN TRIM (UPPER SECTION)  .
  3. Remove trim for instrument panel (lower section). See INSTRUMENT PANEL TRIM (LOWER SECTION)  .
  4. Remove lower section of steering column trim. See STEERING COLUMN TRIM (LOWER SECTION)  .
  5. Unfasten screws for left knee protection. See Fig 1 .
  6. Disconnect plug connection (1). Unlock light guide (2) and detach from light module (3) of auxiliary turn indicator light. If replacing light module, release screws (4) and remove. See Fig 2 .
  7. Take off collar (1). See Fig 3 .
  8. Press lock on plug for electric steering wheel lock and pull lever downwards. See Fig 4 .
  9. Unfasten all lines leading to steering column from their respective brackets.
  10. Release all cables secured to steering column with cable ties.
  11. Detach all plug connections of components (switch unit, servomotor, etc.) on steering column.
  12. Unscrew bolt (1), press lock inwards and remove switch unit towards bottom. See Fig 5 .
  13. Remove clamping bolt. Press down on steering spindle. See Figure .
  14. Loosen shear off screw with chisel or mill screw head. See Fig 6 .
  15. Unfasten screws on support tube. Remove steering column. See Fig 7 .
