12 41 020 Removing and installing/replacing starter motor (M62)

Switch off ignition.

Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.

Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery, refer to 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY  .

Remove reinforcement plate.

CAUTION: The work step "Removing and installing reinforcement plate" contains important installation instructions,
refer to 31 10 010 FRONT AXLE .

Remove protective cap (1) of battery positive lead from starter motor.

Release nut (2).

Tightening torque, refer to 12 41 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 4.6L

Disconnect battery positive lead (3) from starter motor.

Unclip battery positive lead from holders.

Release nuts (1).

Tightening torque, refer to 12 41 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 4.6L

Detach leads (2) from starter motor.

Release screws.

Tightening torque, refer to 12 41 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 4.6L

Pull starter motor out of transmission mount and remove.

Installation: 

Check starter pinion and ring gear for damage, replace starter motor if necessary.
