12 51 001 Replacing wiring harness section for engine (M62)

Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.

Switch off ignition.

NOTE: Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery, refer to 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY  .

Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.

WARNING: Scalding hazard!
Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.

Remove reinforcement plate.

CAUTION: The work step "Removing and installing reinforcement plate" contains important installation instructions, refer to 31 10 010 FRONT AXLE .

Release screws and remove underbody panelling (1).

Disconnect plug connection (1) on starter motor.

NOTE: The plug connection is located above the front axle on the right. For purposes of clarity, the right front wheel is shown removed.

Detach plug (1) from oil level sensor.

Unclip cable from cable holder (2) and lay upwards.

Disconnect plug connections (1) on left and right monitor sensors.

Unclip cables from holders on transmission housing.

Disconnect plug connections (1) on left and right oxygen sensors.

Unlock and remove cable connector (1).

Detach plug (2) from pulse generator for crankshaft.

Unlock and remove cable connector (1).

Unclip cable from cable holders (1) on transmission housing.

Remove heater bulkhead,

refer to 51 71 080 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING HEATER BULKHEAD .

Unlock cable holders (2).

Remove cables (1) from cable holders (2).

Release screws (3).

Remove holder (4).

Release cable tie (1).

Disconnect all plugs in control unit box.

Part of this work is described in the work step "Replacing control unit", refer to 12 14 550 REPLACING CONTROL UNIT (DIGITAL MOTOR ELECTRONICS) (M62, M54)  .

Release nut.

Remove grounding cables from ground support point.

Detach profile seal (1) towards top.

Installation: 

To prevent leaks, you must install profile seals correctly.

Detach plug (2) from temperature sensor.

Detach plug (1) from tank venting valve (2).

Remove intake hose, refer to 13 54 250 REPLACING INLET HOSE (BETWEEN MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR & INTAKE MANIFOLD M62) .

Detach plug (1) from throttle assembly.

Detach plug (3) from alternator.

Detach plug connections (1) of knock sensors from cable strips.

Detach plug (2) from electric changeover valve.

Detach plugs (3) of camshaft sensors from cable strips.

Detach plug (1) from solenoid valve of camshaft adjustment unit on left and right.

Detach plug (2) from switch for program map control.

Remove sealing caps on covers of ignition coils.

Release nuts.

Remove covers on ignition coils.

Installation: 

Check profile seals (1) on left and right for damage and correct seating, replace if necessary.

Unfasten left and right connections on ignition coils.

Disconnect thin grounding cables.

Installation: 

Screw thin grounding cable to ignition coils of cylinders 2 and 7.

Unclip lines on guide tube (1) for oil dipstick.

Release cable ties on battery positive lead in area of upper oil sump section.

NOTE: Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
Check stored fault messages.
Rectify faults.
Now clear the fault memory.
