Removal & Installation: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2005 BMW 330xi, 2005 BMW 325xi, 2004 BMW 330xi, 2004 BMW 325xi, and 2003 BMW 330xi. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect battery, grounding strap to body. See INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY.
  2. Remove intake hood (1). See Fig 1 .
  3. Release fan cowl (1) and pull a little upwards. See Fig 2 .
  4. Remove microfilter housing (1) and heater bulkhead behind it. See Fig 3 .
  5. Fit Special Tool (00 0 200) to Special Tool (00 0 201 / 00 0 202 / 00 0 204 / 00 0 208) and attach. Suspend Special Tool (00 0 200) from front engine suspension lug. See Fig 4 . Contact faces (1) of Special Tool (00 0 208) must rest on screw connection of both side walls.
  6. Tighten the screws (1 and 2). See Fig 5 .
  7. Release nut at top on right engine mount. Release nut at bottom on left engine mount. See Fig 6 .
  8. Remove engine underguard (1) at front, middle rear. See Fig 7 .
  9. Remove complete exhaust system. See REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (M54).
  10. Remove heat shield (1). See Fig 8 .
  11. Grip clamp bushing (2). Loosen nut (1). See Fig 9 .
  12. Lift out retaining plate (1) with a screwdriver. See Fig 10 . Remove cable (2).
  13. Remove screws of flexible disk-to-propeller shaft and transmission output flange. See Fig 11 . DO NOT let propeller shaft fall into joints. See Fig 12 . Joints and rubber sleeve can be damaged on constant-velocity joint.
  14. Grip propeller shaft. Release nuts. Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing (1). See Fig 13 . Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and tie back to side on vehicle underbody.
  15. Remove screws of front propeller shaft. See Fig 14 . Remove screws and remove front propeller shaft. See Fig 15 .
  16. Remove heat shield on right. Remove bracket for engine underguard on right.
  17. Support transmission with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). See Fig 16 .
  18. Release screws. Remove cross-member (1). See Fig 17 .
  19. Remove transfer case screw connection on transmission. Remove transfer case.
  20. Lower transmission. Remove bolt (1). See Fig 18 . Withdraw hydraulic lines (2) to oil cooler from transmission housing.
  21. Unfasten steering spindle from steering gear. See DOUBLE JOINT FOR STEERING SPINDLE LOWER SECTION 4WD .
  22. Raise engine with Special Tool (00 0 200). Remove left engine mount. Install Special Tool (23 0 230) in place of engine mount. See Fig 19 . Engine and transmission are secured at an angle to ensure access to top right transmission screw connection.
  23. Unscrew mounting screw. See Fig 20 . Press vacuum tank (1) for exhaust flap control to one side.
  24. Remove cover. See Fig 21 .
  25. Unfasten retaining screws of torque converter (3 screws) with Special Tool (24 1 110). See Fig 22 .
  26. Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, preassemble Special Tool (24 4 131) in conjunction with Special Tool (24 4 137). Insert Special Tool (24 4 131 / 24 4 137) in opening in transmission housing. See Fig 23 . Clamp torque converter.
  27. Unfasten screws. See Fig 24 . Pull off transmission from engine towards rear and lower it.
