12 42 500 Removing and installing or replacing battery positive lead (S62)

Switch off ignition.

Observe safety instructions for handling vehicle battery. Refer to 61 00 ... SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR HANDLING VEHICLE BATTERY .

Instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery, refer to 12 00 ... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY  .

Remove battery negative lead from battery and cover.

Release screws (1) on right floor panel (2).

Press right floor panel (2) downwards a little.

Pull off cap (1) on battery positive lead.

Release nut on battery positive lead (2).

Disconnect battery positive lead (2).

Release screw (3).

Remove lead holder (4).

Release expansion rivet (5).

Pull panel (6) down a little.

Withdraw battery positive lead (2).

Remove protective cap (1) on starter.

Unscrew nut (2).

Tightening torque, refer to 12 41 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Remove battery positive lead (3) from lead holder (4).

Withdraw battery positive lead (3).

Release metal screws (1).

Remove heat shield (2).

Unclip battery positive lead (1) from cable holders (2).

Unfasten cable clip (1).

Unclip battery positive lead (3) from cable holders (2).

Remove and install alternator, refer to 12 31 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING ALTERNATOR (S62)  .

Release screw connection of battery positive cable at battery positive connection point (1).

Tightening torque, refer to 12 51 4AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Release screws (2).

Remove cover (3).

Installation: 

Insert battery positive lead (1) behind left engine support arm towards top.
