11 12 004 Removing and installing/sealing both cylinder head covers (S62)

Instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery, refer to 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .

Disconnect negative battery lead. Disconnect intake air manifold, refer to 11 61 050 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INTAKE AIR MANIFOLD (S62) .

Remove ignition coils, refer to 12 13 511 REPLACING IGNITION COIL (S62) .

Detach grounding strips (1) from cylinder head cover and lay wiring harness to one side.

Detach grounding strip (1) from cylinder head cover.

Unfasten positive battery terminal on battery support point.

Installation: 

Tightening Torque, refer to 12 51 3AZ in ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Disconnect engine venting hose.

E39 Only 

NOTE: Cylinder bank 5 to 8: Release main flow oil filter from mounting, lines remain connected. It is now considerably easier to remove and install the cylinder head cover on cylinder bank 5 to 8.

Release retaining elements.

Installation: 

Coat outer and inner grooves and sealing face of cylinder head cover all round with anti-friction rubber coating, e.g. glycerine.

Check seal, replace if necessary.

Starting from four corner radii, press inner gasket (1) without torsional stress into groove of cover.

Installation: 

Check seal, replace If necessary.

Align outer gasket loosely on groove in cover. Secure gasket in groove in cover, starting in the corner radii at the back (1) and locate without torsional stress in the groove.

Installation: 

Clean gasket residue from sealing surface.

Apply coat of Drei Bond 1209 to contact surfaces of joint.

Installation:

Check that gasket is correctly seated at sides and on rear side of cylinder head.

Installation: 

Carefully fit and align cylinder head cover.

Insert all retaining elements and screw in still without initial stress.

Tighten down all retaining elements diagonally from inside to outside.
