Checking Timing

  1. Remove both cylinder head covers. See CYLINDER HEAD ( LEFT)  and CYLINDER HEAD (RIGHT)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove spark plugs. Remove engine splash guard. Turn central bolt to rotate crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until piston of first cylinder is at TDC.
    NOTE: With piston No. 1 at TDC position, recess in flange on camshaft is aligned with oil injector strip. See Fig 1 .
  2. Remove dust cover from locating bore. Secure crankshaft in TDC position with Locking Pin (11 2 300). See Fig 2 . Place Locking Fixture (11 3 190) on camshaft. See Fig 3 . If necessary, adjust timing of camshaft. See ADJUSTING CAMSHAFT TIMING  .
    CAUTION: Remove locking pin prior to operating engine.
